When someone becomes a memory, the memory becomes a treasure

Sometimes they say that a woman’s intuition is powerful. I didn’t realize just how powerful it is until today. This morning I woke up in a bad mood, feeling restless and cranky. I didn’t know why but I knew that this day wasn’t the best. By afternoon when I was feeling a bit relieved that the worst is over. I got the news of my friend’s death. Yes, Death. Finality.

He was attending a conference for his company when he met with a tragic accident. He was drowned in the swimming pool of the hotel room where he was put up. Now, who could imagine being drowned when you can swim? Who could imagine that a five star hotel has lifeguards that are incompetent in providing CPR or other life saving medical aids to drowning victims? Who can imagine that 30 years can be a lifespan? By the time he was taken to the hospital it was too late. Newspapers report that he was swimming after the pool was officially closed but friends who were with him at that fateful moment say he pass away due to negligence. All I know is my friend and one time colleague is gone forever.

I will remember Jay, Jayprakash Nair as the ever smiling guy from the windows team. A hardworker who never stopped looking at the positive side of things. I think his face did not have a single grumpy muscle. Although he was chirpy, happy go lucky kind of guy, he was still responsible, level headed and dedicated towards his work. A typical Scorpio who was passionate about everything he did, especially the outdoors. Two or three weeks without a trek meant boredom to him. I still remember how he trained hard for the marathon every year with utter seriousness. The guy used to count days till the Mumbai marathon like you would for a promotion at work. Friends and colleagues who know him would say that he truly “lived to express not to impress”.

I am sure Jay, during those final moments when your life flashed by in front of your eyes, everything you achieved made you proud. There was still a lot to be done, a lot to give and a lot to achieve. But, any human beings life is a story told by God. He chooses the beginning and he chooses the end. People say, tragedies happen, you move on, time heals everything and resort to other clichés when they run out of words expressing their sorrow. It is difficult to put feelings into words but Jay’s untimely passing away will tell us to appreciate each day, to take better care of the people in our life and to never let an opportunity go by. It is necessary for us to learn from him how he cherished every moment and tackled every problem with a smile. We will surely shed tears that he has gone but we will also smile because people like him lived.

Today, when you are no longer with us, all my thoughts go with your family and near ones. Jay, all the smiles that you spread, all the things that you did are reminders of the loss that we will suffer without you around. I will treasure the memories of our working together and the happy times at NMG. I will miss you Jay and so will all your other friends. You will never leave our thoughts.
